E-Milpa

Telematic services to support smallholder farmers in Guatemala

The problem

In Guatemala, 48.3% of the rural population is engaged in agriculture.

46.5% of children under 5 suffer from chronic malnutrition.

In the Dry Corridor region, the poverty level exceeds 70%.

The solution

In the Guatemalan Dry Corridor family agriculture predominates, with the production of basic grains. Precarious conditions are absolute: lack of access to agricultural technology, to information, marketing problems, etc.

E-Milpa is a technological platform that opens a bidirectional communication channel between vulnerable agricultural producers and different organizations, by sending SMS:

  • Provides information to producers adapted to each production system: agricultural practices, nutrition, weather forecasts.

  • It collects precise information from producers, allowing to connect them with different market agents.

  • It serves as a communication tool between organizations and agricultural producers.

The whole process is monitored and evaluated in order to analyze the impact that information has on families and adapt the platform or the information provided as necessary.

Impact

Increase in agricultural productivity.

Improvement of the nutritional conditions of families living in poverty.

Improvement of marketing prices.
